Innovative use of set and immersive virtual solutions for RTPOctober 6, 2021

For the first time, wTVision implemented a giant panoramic screen for RTP’s election coverage. Our solution, combined with AR and a new graphic concept, allowed the channel to make complete use of the set.

wTVision and RTP have been collaborating in election nights coverage for many years, but these Portuguese Regional Election brought something new regarding a better use of space, virtual solutions, and improving the viewers’ experience at home.

The big news on this electoral night was the giant panoramic screen broadcasted during the long hours of coverage, that displayed relevant information regarding the results, predictions, regions of the country, and data from previous years. On-air graphics also included a ticker and sidebar displaying real-time data.

To build this solution, wTVision relied on its own technology and operators, controlling all graphics with its new and improved Elections CG V5 in a combination with R³ Space Engine.

This amazing panoramic screen was a major step regarding the better use of space in the set. It made it easier to create a dynamic, non-stopping live broadcast that truly filled every inch of the set available. This is particularly important during the demanding hours of election coverage for both journalists and directors as well as viewers at home.

Additionally, wTVision provided RTP with an Augmented Reality solution that showcased the most important results coming in, official data, changes in leaderboards, and past-year results.

To do this, our very own Elections CG integrated with Unreal Engine to create photorealistic data-based virtual graphics with perfect shadows, perspectives, and dynamism. Our election coverage software is now equipped with a plugin that fully supports an Unreal Engine workflow with no need to integrate with any other engine.

To generate new and more complex perspectives, wTVision also incorporated Omnicam4Sky and StYpe’s tracking system in its workflow which, in a combination with Unreal Engine, created some unique virtual graphics.

Our broadcast design team was also involved in the project and was responsible for creating a new graphic concept for RTP’s electoral night. In collaboration with the channel’s official guidelines and vision, our creatives were able to provide RTP with a fresher look and a more modern approach designed from scratch to create a uniform environment between all elements. The same team was also responsible for integrating the new graphic concept into broadcasts, including Augmented Reality graphics.

To complement our project for RTP, wTVision also allocated four operators to manage graphics (charts and tickers) and data in the network’s affiliated channels in the Portuguese islands: Madeira and Azores.
